Lahore
For a thousand years, Lahore has been the capital of the Punjab, which is now a province of Pakistan, and the cultural centre of north-west India between the Indus river and New Delhi. The city reached the zenith of its glory during the Moghul Empire from 1524 to 1752 CE. Many of the spectacular buildings from this period have survived until today, including the massive Lahore Fort with the famous Alamgiri Gate, the Shalamar Gardens, and the vast Badshahi Masjid, or Royal Mosque.
Today, Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan with an estimated population of more than 10 million; it is often called "The Cultural Heart of Pakistan".
A Masterpiece of the Mogul Era
Spiral Branching Carpet
Groups of lions, leopards, antelope, and Chinese unicorns romp about in between blossoming tendrils with palmettes and flowers – a wonderful carpet that must have been made around 1610 for a wealthy prince in Lahore , then part of the Mogul Empire.▶ The Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin▶ Lahore
